If you are mounting a scope or a red dot, the Super Redhawk's integral scope-ring cuts solve a problem the 629 makes you pay a gunsmith or a clamp mount to solve, and the extra mass genuinely helps across a long day of full-power loads. If you are shooting irons and carrying the gun, the 629 is better balanced, better looking, and has vastly more holster support. Hunting with glass, take the Ruger. Everything else, take the Smith.

Common questions

Can I shoot .44 Special in either?

Yes. Both chamber .44 Special, which is dramatically milder and is how many owners do most of their shooting. Expect the same carbon-ring cleaning issue you get running .38 in a .357.

Is a .44 Magnum a reasonable first revolver?

Generally no. The recoil and blast build flinches quickly, and a flinch is hard to unlearn. Start with .38 Special or .22 LR and move up once your fundamentals hold under recoil.

Which is better for bear defense?

Neither barrel length here is ideal for fast carry. For that role most people choose a shorter, heavier gun and hard-cast flat-nose ammunition chosen for penetration rather than expansion. Check the regulations where you will be.
